Striper

Some of the most popular game fishing on Lake Cumberland is for the Striped Bass which is commonly referred to as striper, and sometimes called rockfish or rock. The species is not indigenous to Lake Cumberland and has been stocked since 1951. The species has adapted well to Lake Cumberland and has provided some exciting game fishing to tourists and local residents for years. The state record for Striper is held here in Russell County and large (forty+ lb.) striper are taken here every year.

Striped Bass (rockfish, rock, striper) (Morone Saxatilis)
The striped bass body is streamlined and torpedo shaped. Horizontal lines formed by black spots generally extend unbroken the length of this bass. Stripers generally have two patches of teeth on the base of the tongue

Feeding Habits
Crayfish, shad, minnows, shiners and other bait fish

FISHING LOCATIONS
Striper are fished for all over Lake Cumberland but can be found in different locations depending on the time of year and their feeding habits. They can be found in creek mouths, deep channels, and have even been caught in the Cumberland River. Finding the striper and using the appropriate type of bait is quite an art form, but one worth learning for the excitement of landing one of the biggest freshwater game fish. The degree of skill required to fish striper has helped to spawn a number of striper
guide services, all of whom stay busy during the peak fishing times of the year. So be sure to make your reservations early for that fishing adventure to remember!

FISHING METHODS
The most common methods for catching striper is the trolling of live bait at appropriate depths. Fish finders are invaluable in finding this game fish. However, striper can also be caught on artificial baits and plugs during certain feeding times.

FISHING TECHNIQUES INFORMATION
More in depth fishing tips can be obtained from any of the local
bait shops and from local fishermen. The area Guides can provide some excellent river trips and will be quite helpful in your quest for striper.
